Blog List Switch

I have replaced the "Lawyers, Guns and Money" blog with the "Awful Avalanche" blog in my blog list.

I was banned from commenting on "Lawyers, Guns and Money" some time ago and have rather belatedly decided I shouldn't be promoting them.  The replacement "Awful Avalanche" gives a Russian nationalist view of the world.  I find it interesting although I often disagree with it.

Three of the other blogs on my list, "Mr. Money Mustache", "West Hunter" and "Bronte Capital", have become inactive.  However at the moment I don't have any good replacements.  For some reason I haven't been finding a lot of new blogs to follow.  Perhaps blogs are going out of fashion or perhaps I am just less interested.

For financial reporting I would recommend Matt Levine's email list. "Money Stuff".   And for politics the free email version of Nate Silver's substack, "Silver Bulletin".

Blog List Update

Kevin Drum has left Mother Jones and is now blogging at his own site so I have updated my blog list link appropriately. I could never get the previous link to work correctly, it would go to the top Mother Jones page rather than Drum's blog specifically. Fortunately this is not an issue at his new site. The link to Steve Sailer's blog had the same problem, going to a general Unz Review page. I tried again to fix this with partial success, now the link to Sailer's most recent post works correctly but not the link to the entire blog.

I also added the lefty "Lawyers, Guns & Money" blog to my list. I wouldn't say the analysis is generally very impressive but it does provide a view into what a segment of the left is currently thinking about politics. Also they have several active posters so they do generate a lot of content.

Blog Roll Switch

I have replaced educationrealist in my blog roll with West Hunter.  Educationrealist is a blog about teaching by a high school math teacher.  While I generally agree about the importance of innate cognitive ability (compared to other factors) in student achievement the fact is I am just not that interested in the details of teaching medium ability high school math classes.  West Hunter is a blog about human genetics (and other things) by two scientists (one of whom writes most of the posts) working in the field which I find more interesting.

Vox and Falkenblog

I have added Vox, where Matthew Yglesias is now writing, to my blog list.  This is Ezra Klein's new venture which he left the Washington Post to start.  Another of their writers is Brad Plumer.

I recently discovered Falkenblog by Eric Falkenstein, a 1994 economics PhD who has held a variety of finance jobs.  I won't be adding this blog to my list as he stopped updating it last September to avoid any conflicts with his latest job.  Also he can come across as a bit of a crank particularly when he moves away from finance to post on things like politics or evolution.  And he has a Yglesias level propensity for typos and other careless errors which can make him hard to understand.  Nevertheless I found some of his finance posts quite interesting and plan to comment further on some of his major themes which include missing risk premiums, low volatility investing and relative utility functions.

Blog Roll Changes

I have removed Moneybox from my blog roll as Matthew Yglesias is no longer writing it having left Slate to join Ezra Klein's new venture with Vox. I have wanted to include Kevin Drum's blog for Mother Jones for some time but was unable to get the link to function properly.  It now seems to be working so I have added Drum.  I have also returned Nate Silver to my blog roll as he has finally completed the move from the New York Times to ESPN with the launch of the new FiveThirtyEight site Monday.  Like Drum (and others) I am not too impressed with the new site so far but hopefully it will get better.

Blog Roll

I have removed Nate Silver's 538 blog from my blog roll until such time as it restarts following Silver's move from the NYT to ESPN.  I have added educationrealist a blog by a high school math teacher which seems mostly consistent with my views on education.  Namely that the public schools are doing about as well as can be expected and that the main reason some kids do better academically than other kids is that some kids are smarter than other kids.

I have also added the Mr. Money Mustache blog by a man who retired (sort of) at age 30 by saving a ridiculous fraction of his income.  I find his point of view interesting although I often disagree with it.  And there would be problems if everyone tried to adopt his ideas.

I would like to add Kevin Drum's blog at Mother Jones to my blog roll but I have never been able to get the link to work properly in the Blog List widget.  For some reason it sends you someplace else in the Mother Jones website although the link works fine in the body of a post as above.  If anyone knows how to fix this let me know.

English please

I have recently gotten some comment porn site spam in what appears to be Chinese which I have deleted after complaints. In the future I will automatically delete comments which I can't read which means anything not in English.
